Roasting my own coffee!
I read an article not too long ago about coffee having some 900 flavor elements immediately after roasting, and within just a few days they are rapidly lost. I am a huge fan of coffee. Give me a hot mug of dark roasted, earthy coffee with some cream… and I am a happy, happy girl.
After reading the article I found a place in my little town that roasts their own beans, and have been buying theirs. And it’s good. Really, really, good.
Then, I found an article about roasting your own beans. Buying them green, and roasting them, right here at home. In a pan! I didn’t even know coffee beans started out green, I’m not sure what color I thought they were, it wasn’t something I had ever thought about.
Beans, green and ready to roast!
In a hot pan, being shaken and stirred :
Ooh, they are changing colors! And starting to “pop” like pop-corn. Interesting :
Possibly starting to burn, and am getting slightly nervous :
Voila! Coffee! Roasted! At home!
Grinding :
And brewing! This is when I first started getting concerned… it’s looking rather light. And a little too Folgers-esque for comfort :
And ta-da… not such good coffee. It tastes an awful lot like Folgers.
First attempt? Not so great. A+ for effort, C- for taste.
Better luck next time!

And next we make skittles!
Pretty damn good for a 1st attempt - Did the roasting make the house smell wonderful?
Um, no, not so much at all. It made the smoke alarms go off. Ha! The following attempts have been much, much better though! :)
I had no idea you could roast your own beans. That’s way cool. I agree, A+ for your first time.
That’s great! I bet the next batches are going to be much better…Mmmm I can almost smell that!
I had no idea you could do that! Maybe if you roast it in the oven it would come out better?
