I had to write a paper about this book. I’d read it before, and I remember thinking it was alright. But, now that I’ve focused on the story and the characters for so long, I hate it.

Tom and Daisy are mean. Gatsby’s a fool. And Nick and Jordan are nondescript and kind of just thrown in there.

Daisy directly and indirectly kills two people. And she weeps over shirts, but not them? Tom feels justified in letting Gatsby get killed because he was sleeping with some guys wife… because he is new money, and gauche.

It’s all very soap opera, but not enough to make it likeable. Enough to make it and everyone in it very unlikeable.  There were some good bits in there, like the Eyes in the Valley of Ashes… and some good descriptions of Gatsby’s obsession.  But, it doesn’t make up for the story being crap.
